About Paper Monuments

Paper Monuments Re:Present

Paper Monuments is a public art and public history project which has worked over the past couple of years to tell the stories of people, places, events, and movements missing from New Orleans mainstream histories. In Phase One, Paper Monuments partnered with local artists and scholars to create a poster series that explores those narratives, while also asking New Orleans residents to create proposals that imagine new monuments for the city.

Phase Two of Paper Monuments is a collection of temporary art installations across the city that are inspired by the themes of those public proposals. They will be in place from mid-March to the end of April 2019. The art works were selected by jury after an open call for artists in late 2018. The Paper Monuments team is committed to making sure that neighbors to these installations know what is being installed, have a chance to meet the artists, and have a way to reach the team to ask questions, express any concerns, and join in the process.

About the Installation

My name is Jeffrey Andrews, and for my piece I am creating a collection of watercolor portraits paired with answers to the question: Why do you call New Orleans home?

The purpose of this piece is to elevate the everyday people who make our neighborhoods what they are, and it touches on themes of community and belonging.

The installation will be located at Toulouse St and Bayou St John, and I am looking for participants who live in the surrounding neighborhoods and would like to have their portrait painted. If you want to be involved, you can nominate yourself or someone in your community.

To participate, please fill out the following form or contact me at hello@jeffreymakesart.com.
